SMezA + Piano ad libitum
3:20′
First prize in the international Musica Sacra Nova composer’s competition 2026.
First performed on 30.5.2026 by the Girl’s Choir of the Kölner Dom, conducted by Oliver Sperling.
Listen to the piece:
The piece sets the first verse of the famous hymn for Maundy Thursday. It follows an A–B–C–B–A′ form, with the central section incorporating a brief quotation of the hymn’s original melody. The piano accompaniment is to be understood as ad libitum. When present, it provides an interesting additional texture and gives the music a suspended, hovering quality; however, if no piano is available, the choral setting can also stand on its own.
Written for the children’s and youth choir category of the Musica Sacra Nova composition competition 2026, it was important to me while composing to create a balance between accessibility and elements that spark curiosity. The former is supported by the clear melodic language and form, as well as by a strong sense of lyricism in every vocal part. The latter is achieved through the unusual style of the piano accompaniment, the alternation between homophonic and polyphonic sections, and the choice of the Dorian mode, which brightens the minor tonality somewhat and thereby breaks with the listener’s expectations.
The somewhat unorthodox notation using an octave treble clef in the piano part serves to improve readability. It should be understood that the music is to be played one octave higher whenever this special clef appears. Throughout the piece, the piano should always function as an accompaniment and never come to the foreground, so that the singers can sing comfortably above it.

Text:
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor.
Exsultemus et in ipso iucundemur.
Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero.
English:
Where charity and love are, God is there.
The love of Christ has gathered us together.
Let us rejoice and be glad in him.
Let us fear and love the living God,
and love one another with a sincere heart.
Deutsch:
