SATB a cappella
4:20′
First performed on 26.11.2022 by the chamber choir Jeunesse Berlin, conducted by Yannick Wittmann.
A delicate arrangement of the well-known Christmas lullaby, which radiates calm while at the same time transporting both singers and audience into the mysterious world of dreams. What might the little child be dreaming of right now? Between the verses, the soothing words “Sleep quietly” resonate. This emotionally rich journey into dreamland can be sung with the traditional German text or the additional English lyrics. //
Ein feinsinniges Arrangement des bekannten Weihnachts- und Schlafliedes, das zwar Ruhe ausstrahlt, doch die Singenden und das Publikum zur selben Zeit doch in die mysteriöse Welt der Träume versetzt. Was das kleine Kindlein wohl gerade träumen mag? Zwischen den Versen hallen die besänftigenden Worte „Schlaf still“ wider. Gesungen werden kann der spannungsreiche Ausflug ins Traumland mit dem traditionellen deutschen oder dem zusätzlichen englischen Liedtext.
Lyrics (trad. Austria):
Still, still, still,
weil’s Kindlein schlafen will.
Die Englein tun schön jubilieren,
bei dem Kripplein musizieren.
Still, still, still,
weil’s Kindlein schlafen will.Schlaf, schlaf, schlaf,
mein liebes Kindlein schlaf.
Maria tut es niedersingen,
ihre große Lieb darbringen.
Schlaf, schlaf, schlaf,
mein liebes Kindlein schlaf.
English translation by Stuart Smith:
Still, still, still,
see the baby sleep so still.
The angels surround you in their glory,
shining upon this Christmas story.
Still, still, still,
see the baby sleep so still.Sleep, sleep, sleep,
while the world is dreaming deep.
The tiny infant born so lowly
sent to become our savior holy.
Sleep, sleep, sleep,
while the world is dreaming deep.
