Listen to the piece:
This Gloria originates from the Missa Lux et Tenebrae, commissioned by Consortium Vocale Berlin and Rory Wainwright Johnston. Conceived as an expression of joy, movement, and enthusiasm, the movement gains much of its character from the interplay of alternating 6/8 and 3/4 meters, creating a lively, dance-like momentum. Beginning at Laudamus te, overlapping choral textures evoke voices becoming ever more animated in praise before uniting in homophonic clarity at gratias agimus tibi. A contrasting central section offers a moment of meditative calm through repeated text, while the concluding Quoniam returns to the movement’s opening spirit with warmth, sincerity, and optimism. An energetic and rewarding concert work.
